If you’ve never tried blackberry on a pizza before, now’s the time, baby. This pizza recipe uses smashed blackberries as pizza sauce (instead of the more traditional tomato sauce). The end result is MAGICAL.
I recently visited a friend in Seattle where I devoured a marionberry BBQ chicken pizza at a beer hall. The combination of the sweet berries and smokey barbecue flavor really hit the spot. It inspired me to add my own twist to a blackberry pizza recipe by The Stay At Home Chef.
To balance out the sweetness from the berries, we’ll add a little heat with jalapeños and some salty goodness with prosciutto. We’ve also got basil and three types of cheese. What’s not to love?? Best of all, this recipe is quick to prep. It’s the perfect easy-peasy (yet still feels special) dinner you can enjoy with your best friend or partner. You can find all the ingredients at Trader Joe’s (my personal favorite) or any other grocery store.
I used the Trader Joe’s Garlic and Herb Pizza Dough for this recipe, and it turned out perfect. If you’re having trouble finding it, the Trader Joe’s pizza dough is usually found in the refrigerated section near the cheese. The package instructions recommend letting it sit on the counter at room temperature for 30 minutes before rolling it out. Try to remember to take it out of your fridge and let it sit on the counter before you’re ready to cook (I nearly always forget and end up getting a little hangry about it – don’t be like me).
Let’s get cooking!
Blackberry Basil Ricotta Jalapeño Prosciutto Pizza
Ingredients
- 1 package Trader Joe's Garlic and Herb Pizza Dough (or other pizza dough or unbaked crust)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (plus a little extra for the baking sheet)
- 1 package blackberries
- 1 small jalapeño
- 10 large basil leaves
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
- ½ cup ricotta cheese
- 3 slices of prosciutto
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 475 degrees.
- Mash about ¾ of the blackberries in a mixing bowl. (Hint: If you have a drink muddler handy, that will do the trick! Otherwise, you can use any utensil.) Slice the remaining ¼ of blackberries in half and set aside.
- Thinly slice the jalapeno and basil leaves.
- On a lightly-floured work surface, roll out your pizza dough or shape it by hand. (If you don't have a rolling pin, try a wine bottle.)
- Place pizza dough on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Rub olive oil onto dough.
- Spread mashed blackberries over the crust as sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella and freshly grated parmesan cheese. Sprinkle dallops of ricotta cheese across the pizza. Scatter jalapeño slices on top.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and add basil slices. Return to the oven for 2 more minutes.
- Remove from oven. Tear the prosciutto and place pieces on hot pizza. Slice pizza and enjoy.
